Macassar Ebony. Origin: Indonesia/Celebes Islands. Heartwood has dramatic striped appearance, somewhat similar to Zebrawood. Yellow to reddish brown body with darker brown or black stripes. Tends to be rather difficult to work, due to its high density, blunting effect on cutters, and its occasionally interlocked grain. It is extremely expensive. The tree grows slowly, has a very limited natural habitat, and is highly desired for the wood’s aesthetic appeal and toughness.
Spanish Cedar for humidors. Origin: Central and South America. Spanish cedar is a tropical hardwood found throughout Central and South America. It is one the world’s most important timber species. Esteemed for its aromatic and attractive pink to salmon-red wood, which is resistant to rotting and insects. Has a distinct, lingering, cedar-like scent; this characteristic of the wood makes it a favorite for cigar boxes.
