The Monolith Type 4 cigar ashtray is conceived as a linear sculptural object reduced to its most essential architectural form. Its elongated body is cut through with sharply faceted geometry, creating a sequence of angular planes that interact continuously with light across the polished obsidian surface.
Designed as a single-cigar rest, the composition emphasizes proportion, precision and uninterrupted material continuity. The recessed cigar channel is carved directly into the upper structure, preserving the purity of the monolithic silhouette while reinforcing the object’s directional geometry.
Crafted entirely from black obsidian, silver obsidian or mahogany obsidian, each variation transforms the visual character of the piece. Black obsidian creates maximum depth and mirror-like contrast, silver obsidian reveals flowing directional mineral reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian introduces layered volcanic brown formations with warmer tonal movement.
Unlike traditional ashtrays centered around mass and volume, the Type 4 focuses on linear tension and crystalline transitions. The faceted carving causes reflections to fracture and shift across the object, giving the volcanic glass an almost cut-gem appearance.

Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) — Origin: Armenia
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly without developing a crystalline structure. This amorphous composition allows obsidian to fracture with extremely sharp edges and achieve exceptionally high surface polish.
Armenian obsidian is particularly valued for its dense structure and optical depth. In silver obsidian, natural mineral alignment creates flowing metallic-like reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian reveals layered reddish-brown volcanic formations against darker body tones.
In the Monolith Type 4, the sharply faceted geometry amplifies these optical properties, causing light to break across the carved planes with gemstone-like intensity.
