The Monolith Type 13 cigar ashtray is built around a compact square composition defined by deep carved recesses, softened external edges and strong horizontal mass. Unlike more fluid or elevated forms, Type 13 emphasizes grounded proportions and volumetric balance, giving the object a dense architectural presence.
Crafted entirely from black obsidian, silver obsidian or mahogany obsidian, the ashtray reveals the layered visual depth of volcanic glass through broad polished surfaces and sharply recessed internal geometry. The interaction between the outer monolithic block and the carved circular center creates a controlled contrast between solidity and negative space.
Each of the four cigar rests is cut directly into the structure, forming a continuous recessed ring around the central basin. The geometry remains restrained and stable, while the reflective obsidian surface introduces movement through changing light and mineral variation.
Black obsidian creates a dense uninterrupted visual field, silver obsidian reveals flowing directional reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian introduces layered volcanic brown tones with natural reddish depth.
The engraved G.P.Grant signature remains discreetly integrated into the object, preserving the minimal and sculptural identity of the composition.

THE ARTISTRY OF MATERIALS
Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) — Origin: Armenia
Armenian obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed through the rapid cooling of lava, producing a dense material capable of achieving extremely sharp carved transitions and mirror-like polish.
In the Monolith Type 13, the material is expressed through broad reflective surfaces interrupted by deeply recessed geometry. Silver obsidian reveals directional mineral flow beneath the polished exterior, while mahogany obsidian displays layered volcanic formations ranging from deep brown to reddish-black.
The natural density and optical depth of obsidian allow the object to appear visually heavy and minimal at the same time, reinforcing the monolithic identity of the design.
