OBSIDIAN CIGAR ASHTRAY TYPE 9 — BLACK, SILVER & MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN
The Monolith Type 9 cigar ashtray is defined by a directional asymmetrical composition carved through sharply inclined geometric planes and a recessed circular basin. Its elongated sculptural body creates a sense of forward movement, while the deep faceted carving reinforces the monolithic visual weight of the object.
Designed as a single-cigar ashtray, the recessed cigar channel extends directly into the circular chamber, integrating functionality into the architectural structure without interrupting the purity of the form. The sharply angled surfaces create fractured reflections across the obsidian body, causing the volcanic glass to behave visually like a carved mineral crystal.
Crafted entirely from black obsidian, silver obsidian or mahogany obsidian, each variation transforms the optical character of the piece. Black obsidian creates dense mirror-dark contrast with maximum visual depth, silver obsidian introduces metallic directional reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian reveals layered volcanic brown formations with warm reddish movement and natural mineral variation.
Unlike radial or symmetrical forms within the Monolith collection, the Type 9 emphasizes directional geometry and sculptural imbalance, creating a more dynamic architectural presence. The tension between the recessed basin and the sharply inclined external structure gives the object a distinctive visual identity from every angle.
Created for refined cigar environments, architectural interiors and collectors of sculptural smoking objects, the Monolith Type 9 combines volcanic material intensity with aggressive geometric precision.
The Monolith Type 9 ashtray is organized around an asymmetrical faceted structure with a recessed circular basin and integrated single-cigar channel.
Its sharply inclined obsidian planes create fragmented reflections and strong directional shadow contrast across the polished volcanic glass surface. The elongated sculptural geometry gives the object visual movement and architectural tension.
The combination of angular carving and recessed circular form creates a monolithic object defined by precision, imbalance and material depth.
THE ARTISTRY OF MATERIALS
Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) — Origin: Armenia
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools rapidly before crystals can develop, producing a dense amorphous structure with highly reflective optical properties.
Armenia contains some of the world’s most historically significant obsidian-bearing volcanic regions, where volcanic glass has been used since antiquity for carving, cutting tools and ceremonial objects.
In the Monolith Type 9, the sharply faceted geometry amplifies the optical behavior of obsidian. Silver obsidian reveals flowing metallic-like mineral reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian displays layered reddish-brown volcanic formations with natural tonal movement. The polished volcanic glass reflects light with gemstone-like sharpness, continuously changing appearance depending on perspective and surrounding illumination.
EXCLUSIVITY & HERITAGE
The Monolith collection reflects G.P.Grant’s exploration of volcanic obsidian as a material for collectible architectural objects defined by sculptural carving and geometric precision.
Every Type 9 ashtray is individually carved, polished and finished by hand. The production process requires extensive manual refinement to preserve uninterrupted reflections, exact faceted transitions and balanced structural proportions throughout the asymmetrical composition.
Produced in limited quantities, each piece combines volcanic material rarity, monolithic geometry and collectible craftsmanship within a contemporary sculptural cigar accessory.
