OBSIDIAN CIGAR ASHTRAY TYPE 2 — BLACK, SILVER & MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN
The Monolith Type 2 cigar ashtray reduces the object to its essential architectural elements — mass, proportion and carved negative space. Defined by its elongated rectangular structure and single recessed cigar channel, the composition emphasizes restraint and precision rather than ornamentation.
Crafted entirely from black obsidian, silver obsidian or mahogany obsidian, the ashtray reveals the dense optical depth of volcanic glass through uninterrupted polished planes and sharply cut internal geometry. The long recessed chamber creates a strong visual contrast against the solid outer block, giving the object a calm but monolithic presence.
Unlike multi-rest ceremonial ashtrays, Type 2 is intentionally minimal. The single cigar groove is integrated directly into the carved structure, preserving the purity of the form and reinforcing the object’s linear architectural identity.
Black obsidian produces a continuous mirror-dark surface with maximum contrast, silver obsidian introduces subtle flowing mineral reflections beneath the polished exterior, while mahogany obsidian reveals layered volcanic formations with deep reddish-brown movement.
Minimal in composition yet visually dense in material character, the Monolith Type 2 functions as both a refined cigar accessory and a sculptural desk object shaped from natural volcanic glass.
The Monolith Type 2 ashtray is organized around a linear recessed composition carved into a solid rectangular obsidian volume.
Its uninterrupted polished surfaces create dense reflections and strong shadow contrast, while the elongated cigar channel introduces directional geometry and spatial depth. The object emphasizes minimalism, proportion and material purity.
The restrained form allows the natural character of obsidian to become the dominant visual element of the composition.
THE ARTISTRY OF MATERIALS
Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) — Origin: Armenia
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed through the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. Its amorphous structure allows the material to achieve extremely sharp carved edges and deep reflective polish.
Armenian obsidian is particularly valued for its dense structure and distinctive mineral movement. Silver obsidian reveals soft directional reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian displays layered reddish-brown volcanic formations against a darker body tone.
Unlike crystalline stone, obsidian reflects light with glass-like intensity, creating a visual effect that shifts continuously depending on viewing angle and surrounding light conditions.
EXCLUSIVITY & HERITAGE
The Monolith collection explores the transformation of volcanic obsidian into collectible geometric objects defined by minimal architectural form and precision carving.
Every Type 2 ashtray is individually cut, polished and finished by hand. The production process focuses on preserving uninterrupted reflective surfaces and exact linear geometry while maintaining the natural visual depth of volcanic glass.
Produced in limited quantities, each piece represents a balance between sculptural restraint, material authenticity and functional design for refined cigar environments.
