OBSIDIAN CIGAR ASHTRAY TYPE 7 — BLACK, SILVER & MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN
The Monolith Type 7 cigar ashtray is defined by a radial faceted composition inspired by the geometry of cut volcanic crystal. Its sculptural octagonal body surrounds a deep circular basin, while the broadened cigar rests extend outward through sharply carved planes that create a dynamic interaction between light, shadow and reflection.
Unlike softer rounded forms, the Type 7 emphasizes fractured geometry and visual tension. Every surface transition is intentionally angular, allowing the polished obsidian to behave almost like a faceted gemstone. Reflections move sharply across the carved planes, continuously changing the appearance of the object depending on perspective and surrounding light.
Crafted entirely from black obsidian, silver obsidian or mahogany obsidian, each variation reveals a distinct material identity. Black obsidian produces dense mirror-like contrast with exceptional depth, silver obsidian introduces metallic directional reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian displays layered reddish-brown volcanic formations with warmer tonal movement.
Designed for four cigars, the recessed rests are integrated directly into the sculptural structure, preserving geometric continuity throughout the composition. The central recessed chamber reinforces the monolithic visual weight of the object while maintaining practical functionality for cigar ritual use.
Created for refined cigar lounges, architectural interiors and collectors of sculptural smoking accessories, the Monolith Type 7 combines volcanic material intensity with crystalline geometric precision.
The Monolith Type 7 ashtray is organized around a faceted radial structure with a recessed circular basin and four broadened cigar rests integrated into the carved obsidian body.
Its angular planes fracture reflections across the polished volcanic glass surface, creating strong light contrast and gemstone-like visual depth. The composition emphasizes symmetry, sculptural sharpness and monolithic balance.
The combination of faceted geometry and deep recessed form gives the object a powerful architectural presence while preserving refined functionality.
THE ARTISTRY OF MATERIALS
Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) — Origin: Armenia
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed through the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava, preventing crystal formation and producing a dense amorphous structure with highly reflective properties.
Armenian obsidian is recognized for its depth, sharp fracture structure and distinctive mineral variations. Silver obsidian reveals flowing metallic-like reflections caused by aligned internal inclusions, while mahogany obsidian displays layered reddish-brown volcanic formations against darker body tones.
The polished faceted geometry of the Monolith Type 7 amplifies these natural optical characteristics, causing light to break across the carved surfaces with crystalline intensity and visual movement.
EXCLUSIVITY & HERITAGE
The Monolith collection reflects G.P.Grant’s approach to transforming volcanic obsidian into collectible sculptural objects defined by precision carving and architectural geometry.
Every Type 7 ashtray is individually carved, polished and finished by hand. The production process requires extensive manual refinement to preserve uninterrupted reflections, exact faceted transitions and balanced radial symmetry throughout the object.
Produced in limited quantities, each piece combines volcanic material rarity, sculptural craftsmanship and monolithic design language within a highly distinctive collectible cigar accessory.
