OBSIDIAN CIGAR ASHTRAY TYPE 14 — BLACK, SILVER & MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN
The Monolith Type 14 cigar ashtray is defined by a sharply faceted diamond-shaped composition carved entirely from natural volcanic obsidian. Its sculptural geometry combines deep angular planes with a recessed circular basin, creating a powerful contrast between architectural sharpness and fluid reflective depth.
The outer structure is organized through elongated triangular facets converging toward the center, producing a crystalline monolithic form with strong directional symmetry. Each carved surface captures and redirects reflections differently, allowing the polished obsidian to reveal shifting optical intensity across the composition.
Crafted from black obsidian, silver obsidian or mahogany obsidian, every variation presents a distinct material identity. Black obsidian emphasizes dense mirror-like depth and dramatic contrast, silver obsidian introduces flowing graphite-silver reflections beneath the polished surface, while mahogany obsidian reveals layered volcanic formations with rich reddish-brown tonal movement and natural visual texture.
Designed for four cigars, the recessed cigar rests are integrated directly into the geometric structure, preserving continuity throughout the sculptural composition. The circular recessed chamber creates visual balance within the angular body while reinforcing the monolithic architectural presence of the object.
Created for refined cigar lounges, contemporary interiors and collectors of sculptural smoking accessories, the Monolith Type 14 combines volcanic material intensity with disciplined geometric execution and collectible design character.
The Monolith Type 14 ashtray is structured around a diamond-shaped faceted composition with a recessed circular basin and four integrated cigar rests.
Its elongated angular planes create strong directional reflections across the polished volcanic glass surface, generating depth, contrast and gemstone-like optical movement.
The balance between sharp geometric carving and the smooth recessed interior reinforces the sculptural and architectural identity of the object while maintaining refined cigar functionality.
THE ARTISTRY OF MATERIALS
Obsidian (Volcanic Glass) — Origin: Armenia
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed through the rapid cooling of lava, creating a dense reflective material with sharp fracture characteristics and exceptional visual depth.
Armenian obsidian is distinguished by its purity, polished reflectivity and complex mineral formations. Black obsidian reveals deep mirror-like contrast, silver obsidian produces soft metallic directional reflections beneath the surface, while mahogany obsidian displays layered reddish-brown volcanic structures with dynamic tonal variation.
The sharply faceted geometry of the Monolith Type 14 amplifies these natural optical properties, allowing light to travel continuously across the carved planes and polished surfaces with crystalline intensity.
EXCLUSIVITY & HERITAGE
The Monolith collection reflects G.P.Grant’s approach to transforming volcanic obsidian into collectible sculptural objects through architectural geometry and precision craftsmanship.
Every Type 14 ashtray is individually carved, polished and hand-finished to preserve exact geometric transitions, uninterrupted reflective surfaces and balanced structural symmetry. The production process requires extensive manual refinement to achieve the sculptural precision characteristic of the Monolith series.
Produced in limited quantities, each piece represents a fusion of volcanic material rarity, sculptural design language and collectible cigar craftsmanship.
